Despicable Minions #1

The biggest toy industry news of 2013 was Lego overtaking Hasbro in sales to become the 2nd biggest toy company in the world.  The biggest toy industry news of 2014 was Mattel's purchase of Mega Brands (which includes Mega Bloks), giving the top toy company a distinct advantage in competing with Lego's dominance in construction toys.  The acquisition cost Mattel $460 million.

The result for a Mega Bloks fan like me was the introduction of two new lines and a greater focus on minifigure-driven sets.  Finally, the brick-building system takes a backseat to the overwhelming popularity of the figures.  While I will have to explore the Spongebob Squarepants Mega Bloks figures another time, I would like to first take a look at the newest of the new: Despicable Me.

Riding on the success of Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013), a spin-off prequel is set to open in theaters on July 10th of this year.  The film will simply be called Minions, and it will detail the origin of these little, yellow henchmen.  Already adding to the mounting minion madness are these brand new Mega Bloks minifigures available in a blind-box series of six, plus another twelve exclusive to seven unique construction sets.
